You want to finally actually take that vacation, but you don't think you can afford to take that vacation. Maybe you can!. Most of the time saving money or just getting out of debt can be as easy as making a few changes in your lifestyle. Here are a few tips to help you on your way to saving the money for your dream vacation.
Save your change. I have previously written an article on saving change and how much can be saved. Saving your change can put you much closer to your goal.
Be energy efficient. Make sure that you have all of the doors, windows, and joints in your house airtight. Also turn off anything not in use. These little tips can help you save a few hundred a year and is also good for the environment. Also, if replacing an old appliance, replace it with an Energy Star approved appliance. It may be more right now, but the electricity savings and the tax break you get at the end of that year are more than worth it.
Buy things off-brand. You don't need Kellogg's when you can buy a bigger bag of Malt-O-Meal for less. Or a $200 iPod when you can buy the same music storage for $79. Or a RAZR cell phone when you can get the one for $0.99-$19.99 with your cell plan. The point is, you don't need to spend the money to have what is essentially the same thing.
Borrow instead of buying when you can. Want to read the latest book by your favorite author? Then borrow it from the library! Want to see a movie? Many libraries have movies to borrow as well, and it's free to borrow them! I estimate that I have saved more than $10,000 by going to the library.
If you don't watch a whole lot of HBO, Cine-max, Show-time, etc., then don't buy the channels. They just waste money if you don't watch them a lot. Also, if you rarely watch cable TV, you might want to consider getting rid of the cable altogether.
There is nothing wrong with leftovers. I have seen people throwing away the leftovers right after dinner. This is a complete and total waste. When making a meal, it is usually cheaper to make more than what you need for the meal. Then you can eat the leftovers for lunch or have a leftover night. You can get 2 meals for a little more than the price of one most times.
When driving around doing errands, make as few trips as possible. Also use any gas-saving tips that you know or find out. With the price of gas nowadays, the savings can add up extremely fast.
Always search for the best deal in everything. For example, you are at the grocery store buying butter and you see 2 cartons, one is a 12 oz for $1.50, the other is a 30 oz for $3.00, get the 30 oz. You get 6 more ounces for the same price and you know you are going to eventually use it. Use coupons when ever you can. I remember when I was little and you could get tons of coupons and could even find a place where there was a double coupon day, My mother got a whole shopping cart of food and they owed her 5 cents!
Use things as long as they can be used. So what if you computer is last year's-model, your iPod is first generation, or your cell phone is a year old. Don't replace them for newer versions yet! As long as it still works, there is no need to replace it. I have seen so many people waste tons of money always trying to have the latest things.
If you keep your appliances, your car, and your house maintained like they should be, you will get a longer life out of everything. I have seen people use their computer everyday and have it for more than a decade. Some of the first cars are still running because they were well taken care of. And homes can last hundreds of years with the proper care. You wont have problems with these things if you take care of them and you won't have to shell out the money to replace them, either.
Do these things and you may see vast improvements to the amount of money you have.
